LexisNexis® WOMEN TO WATCH 2023

Gigi Chung is a Senior Solicitor at the Intellectual Property Department (IPD) of the Government of HKSAR and has always specialised in Intellectual Property (IP) legal matters since the beginning of her career. During her traineeship at a local law firm which was recommended by Legal 500 for its IP practice, Gigi was heavily trained on contentious and non-contentious trademark practices in Hong Kong, the mainland China and other jurisdictions. Later on, Gigi joined the IP and litigation team of a major local law firm. She was responsible for managing the trademark and patent portfolio of MNCs and listed companies in Hong Kong and the Asia-Pacific region.

Over the years, Gigi had developed a keen interest in IP and aspired to become an IP lawyer, particularly because IP is the only area of subject in law which intersects with technology and business.  In order to apply IP law in a commercial setting, Gigi left private practice and worked for a local media corporation which has an international presence. Having a profound interest in formulating IP policies and legislation instead of merely advising on IP law, she subsequently joined the IPD as a legal officer. Since then, Gigi has participated in the advisory work of a wide range of IP and technology projects of the Government, which involve licensing matters and IP rights infringement and enforcement. She also assisted in taking IP-related legislative bills through the Legislative Council and stakeholder engagement.

In addition, Gigi is a hearing officer and she has made decisions for interlocutory trademark proceedings. Some of Gigi’s decisions were unprecedented, which serve as references for other hearing officers of IPD when they come across similar situations in the future. Gigi has also represented Hong Kong when attending international conferences such as APEC’s First Senior Officials' Meeting in 2022.

Gigi enjoys creative writing, and she is the 1st runner-up in the 36th Youth Literary Award – Children’s Literature category.
