Katy Lau’s high level of dedication, innovation and efficiency both in private practice and in-house services have earned her the moniker of “entrepreneur of the practice”. As an example, she has gone over and beyond, including building an impressive list of accolades for the practice groups which she has worked with throughout her career.

Some of the more notable transactions she has led on include, representing a major private equity fund in acquiring a NYSE listed conglomerate, one of the rare cross-border transactions by an Asian sponsor closed during the height of the COVID-19, whilst juggling a myriad of regulatory and geopolitical consideration such foreign exchange controls and CFIUS.  That transaction won various awards, one of which is US M&A Advisor “Cross Border Restructuring Award of the Year.” The accolade also enhanced the reputation of the law firm in Tier 1 rankings under Legal 500.

She is currently working at TPP Investments (the private equity/venture capital arm of Tencent Holdings Limited), as its core member of the legal department, and led the legal and compliance function, as well institutionalising best practices and policies as the platform grows.  By working with the various cross functional teams to build the department’s systems and processes from the ground up, whilst taking on the challenges of the technology investments spanning a myriad of sectors, amidst the very uncertain geopolitical times of the year(s) ahead.

Aside from legal work, she is active in improving Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. She keenly advocates for women to step up at work, and facilitates female mentorship sessions and “leaning-in” circles related work.
